Dover Phoenix Invitational - initial comments

I'm pretty pleased with how the Phoenix performed this weekend;
conditioning and a hint of speed. As a coach, I'm always looking at the improvements that must be made and often forget to look at our achievements. Once I get the final results tomorrow, I will share that success...I know we had a ton of PBs, and that is great for this time of year! Now for the bad stuff - What was glaringly obvious was our poor performance of the skills that the coaches have been working on with swimmers: break-outs (the part where you transition from streamline into stroking), streamlines, and turns. It was disappointing to see most swimmers breathe on their first stroke out of turns, starts, and approaching the finish. For a whole month, the common theme has been those exact skills. We DO NOT want to wait until the end of the season and an important meet to look at these details. "Good swimmers sweat the small stuff". These poor habits must stop NOW! All it takes is a little focus - one of the three- F words that we can use: Feel, FOCUS and Flow

This coming week, I will join the coaches on pool deck during the Club Night and the Tanglin Meet and we will give feedback immediately after races. This will be a more valuable learning experience - for all of us.

Huge thank you to Coaches Henry, Monica, Peter, Alex, Joanna and Janice. They are a great team and they managed our meet, which was quite a beast, very well. It is a pleasure to work along side these guys. I'm excited every day when I see them in front of swimmers...rest assured swimmers, you are in very good hands.

Our marshals were fantastic yesterday, the MVP award goes to Mr. Koczanowski, Mr. van Ratingen and Mr. Beacroft along with a few more parents that kept the meet running by ensuring the swimmers were stacked and racked, ready to swim. Bravo guys.

Well done everyone.

More to come tomorrow when the results are in....
