The Swim Stars show brought many of the world's best swimmers to Singapore. Many Phoenix swimmers and their parents made it to the event, that was held at the new OCBC Aquatic center. It was obvious that this new facility needs a good shake-down before the next event as one side of the building lost power and the use of the sound system, the fans and the elevators. This didn't detract from the fact that we got to watch European, world and Olympic champions, and world record holders. The racing was great, as the swimmers competed in, what was for them, a relaxed event that allowed them to connect with a very enthusiastic audience. Many of our team members were seen on TV and the front page of the newspaper!
Cameron van der Burgh and Roland Schoeman then visited UWC for a brief clinic (enough said).
Their messages were:
It is important to enjoy sports (multiple) while you are growing up. When you have a true goal in mind, then, more of a commitment is necessary and sacrifices must be made.
Believe in yourself, focus on yourself - not other people your age or in your race. Comparing your self to others is not healthy.
Streamline! The easiest way to go fast is to streamline - off the walls, out of your starts and also while you are swimming; keeping the body inline.
Practice. Roland talked about how he would spend hours at the local pool perfecting his starts.
Cameron's daily schedule is:
2 hr Swim Practice
1 1/2 hr Weight Training
Rest
45 min abs/core
2 hrSwim Practice.
He is now beginning a serious two year training cycle for the Olympics in 2016.
They both have already flown off to Brazil for their next meet before rejoining the World Cup circuit.
Roland will be back for the World Cup in Singapore
