Just so everyone is clear, SAS have a high school season as a part of IASAS. This is a meet with their IASAS squad - all high school students. We have chosen our fastest swimmers regardless of age.
Looking forward to SEASAC, swimmers and parents should know how we pick the teams... When we make selections, we use the data that we have from meets for each swimmer. We must choose a team of five boys and five girls from each age group to swim a variety of events each, not necessarily in their favoured event, but in events that we need them to swim in, based on our team dynamic. This is not my favourite way of doing things! I like qualifying times! Then there is no subjectivity, however SEASAC, and most school conferences do not use this system. It can be harsh not to be picked and understand why. Unfortunately, the selection criteria cannot be set in stone, as flexibility is essential in order to make choices for the team's benefit.
Sometimes the failure to make a team can be a catalyst for more focused practice (see Michael Jordan). We are not in the business of disappointing our swimmers - unfortunately this is all a necessary evil.
We will travel to Bangkok for the ISB Splash meet the weekend following SEASAC for what is reported to be a fun meet that runs long course one day and short course the next. Information will come soon for this!
