Welcome back for Season 4 swimming!
I spoke to the swimmers at training this morning about goal-setting. Goal-setting is a great way to increase motivation, as it helps you remember (1) the reasons you are swimming (2) what you need to do to improve.
I have put together a very simple goal-setting sheet which we will use next year (2017/18).
This sheet will allow you to keep track of your targets are over a given time period (whether it is for performance, enjoyment, fitness, whatever), and what you believe it will take to reach these targets. By having more regular reminders, you are much more likely to focus on the important things during training. These important things are individual to you, and will help you achieve your outcome goals whatever they may be.
Season 4 has historically been one of the more difficult times of the year for performance swimming motivation, as ACSIS, SEASAC and SNAGS are finished. Although we will introduce structured goal-setting in the next academic year, it would be useful to use this sheet to have a firm idea of what you would like to achieve by the end of season 4 (short term goals), and to think about what it will take to do this (process goals). Phoenix coaches will work through these sheets next year, but are more than happy to help/guide for the remainder of this year.
